 Minor Skin Surgery

Minor skin surgery is a procedure usually carried out under a local anaesthetic to treat benign or malignant skin lesions. These are routine office based procedures which may or may not involve suturing. The procedure that we can arrange to be carried out include

  • Curettage or scraping of the skin
  • Shave biopsies
  • Punch or incisional biopsies
  • Excision biopsies
  • Subcision

Excluding subcision , all the above procedures  involve taking a piece of skin through different methods such as scraping, shaving or cutting out a piece of skin (Punch/Incisional/Excisional biopsies). This is either for a diagnostic purpose or also to remove for example an irritating benign lesion such as a skin tag or benign mole or for removal of a suspicious mole or a skin lesion. All moles or suspicious lesions removed are sent for microscopic examination to a pathology lab for confirmation of the diagnosis.

Subcision is a procedure carried out to improve the depressed scars produced after an inflammatory condition such as acne. It can be used to improve chicken pox scars or small depressed scars due to trauma. This involves the use of needle under a local anaesthetic, which is introduced under the skin and the tip of the needle is used to break the scars to help release the tethered skin which leads to improvement in the appearance of the scars .

Cryotherapy is the procedure where liquid nitrogen spray is used to freeze the skin tissue leading to tissue destruction. This is used to treat benign lesions such as skin tags, warts and seborrheic keratosis and also minor sun damage known as actinic keratosis.

Lumps and bumps that can be treated with skin surgery may include:

Moles, Warts, Skin tags, Milia, Seborrheic keratosis, Solar keratosis, Cysts, Haemangiomas or red spots and Molluscum contagiosum and others.
